Snorkeling with Stingrays
Our Snorkeling with Stingrays excursions get you up close and personal with these majestic creatures in their natural environment, not for the faint hearted as some of our Stingrays can be quite large and ever so friendly. So we get the optimum conditions and warmer waters we only run this tour between the middle of January to end of March
After an on land briefing about how to act in the water around the Stingrays (Whai) you will enter the water with our trained guide and will swim over the reef to snorkel and swim with the Short Tail Stingrays, Eagle Rays and other Reef dwellers in their natural habitat as they enjoy the sun’s rays at Tatapouri. The Short tailed Stingrays (whai) can get up to 350kg’s luckily the ones you may see are only about 250 kg’s the smaller Eagle Ray Stingrays (whai) are not as large and more distinctive with their pointed wings and long whip like tails.
You’ll get to touch and observe our wild and friendly stingrays as they glide along the ocean floor. To our crew these animals become part of our whanau (family) not dissimilar to a pet and many of them have distinctive personalities and markings allowing us to give them names to reflect the personalities they present. These beautiful creatures have had some bad press over the years but as you will find out when spending time with the Stingrays (whai) and Eagle Rays at Tatapouri they are happy to interact with us if we provide them with the respect they deserve.
The Stingrays (whai) and other reef dwellers are not in an enclosed area and are free to come and go as they please. The Stingrays (whai) also have not had any of their barbs removed which may happen when they are enclosed in aquariums or likes. As kaitiaki (guardians) of the Moana (sea) we wish to reduce the impact on the marine animals whilst we provide our tours therefore we ask that you follow our guides instructions at all times to keep our marine animals safe and of course the humans.
